Shop Small Gift Guide for Her

For the last several years, my sisters and I have created Pinterest boards with ideas for birthday and Christmas gifts--it’s the easiest way to get the types of gifts you know the person will like, but also still keep it a surprise! A couple of years ago, I created a blog post of “Last Minute Gift Ideas” and had a lot of good feedback, so I decided to make an updated one for this year, but with a twist!
In the spirit of encouraging us to shop small, (and perhaps to give some family ideas) I put together a list of ideas and stores to get your special lady or friend their holiday gift!

B. Bungalow (IG: @b.bungalow)
This store is the cutest boutique with amazing clothes and other gifts! I can’t walk in without buying at least something--I’m partial to all of the sweaters and softest loungewear I’ve ever worn! The best part is they have everything listed online and even have ways for you to virtually shop with the store manager or reserve the store for private shopping with a small group! This store has gone above and beyond to make you feel comfortable during this time of social distancing! Here are two picks from B. Bungalow for my list:
Picture
Picture
Copper & Lace (IG: @copperlaceboutique)
I am extremely partial to this store because not only is it right downtown in Antioch (a 3 minute drive for me) but also it is owned and run by a friend of mine! For the last few years, Shannon ran her online boutique, but was able to set up a storefront this year and it is so adorable! There are so many clothing pieces and accessories to choose from and at a very reasonable gift-giving price! Here are my picks from Copper & Lace:
Picture
Picture
KB Chic Boutique (IG: @kbchic_boutique)
This online jewelry boutique has become a quick favorite of mine! You can get a custom-made (or pre-made) jewelry piece made with authentic designer buttons or fixtures! Kari takes orders via Instagram or Facebook and you can look at some examples of jewelry she has designed! This necklace is my current favorite!

Whimsy & Wellness (IG: @whimsyandwellness)
My go-to shop for oily accessories is Whimsy & Wellness! They create some truly beautiful oil roller bottles, spray bottles and other items to use with and create gifts with essential oils!
Baggage & Co (IG: @baggage_and_co)
These bags catch my eye every time they pop up in my Instagram feed! Check out this Etsy shop for beautifully designed and created bags for carrying oil rollers and other cosmetics!
Picture
Raleigh Bird (IG: @shop.raleighbird)
This new clothing boutique has some of the cutest activewear, loungewear and sweaters! They always have some unique items and also some name brand items you’d recognize! You can shop online or locally at the Lake Forest Dailey Method Barre & Cycle Studio! I am obsessed with this sweater and leggings!
Picture
Picture
Sweet Mama Blair (IG: @sweetmamablair)
These sweatshirts are so cute and reasonably priced, especially when you think about them being purchased from a small Etsy shop! I was obsessed with the dripping Chanel crewneck and discovered so many other cute items in this shop! Get your Christmas gift orders in quickly to be sure they can be shipped on time! Follow her shop on Instagram too!
Picture
Semicolon Bookstore (IG: @semicolonchi)
I have a huge place in my heart for books--if I could get a book as a gift for every occasion through the year I would be happy and fill every table and open shelf in my house with them! One thing to keep in mind is buying books for local or small book stores! Though big, online conglomerates make it very easy and sometimes cheaper, supporting your local shops goes a long way! Semicolon Bookstore is the only black women-owned bookstore and gallery space in Chicago and they have done some amazing things for their community, as well as making shopping convenient and safe! Shop online through their Instagram link or through their website! These are two titles I have had my eye on:

I have truly made an effort so far to make the majority of my gift purchases through local or small shops this year! Your support and purchases from these businesses go a very long way, and spreading the word about them helps a great deal, too! I know it isn’t always possible to find every toy or item you need, but branch out and look into your local stores too and you might be pleasantly surprised at what you find!

Happy Holidays & Happy Shopping!

Affordable Powder Room Makeover

This has definitely been the year for home improvement projects!

Want one that won’t break the bank? I sure needed one with the front room makeover I have going on simultaneously, slowly and much more pricey!

We needed to freshen up this powder room because it is so often used and just was becoming sort of an eyesore to me. We used some leftover paint from our bedroom accent wall--this paint is the best quality! It only takes one coat!

I found the round mirror at Target for $60 along with the Hearth & Hand bathroom rug ($20), and the shelves on Amazon for $25!

With the paint already being paid for, the only things that I wanted to change out were the light fixture, mirror, shelves and small rug...but those things add up!

I found a Pinterest post about revamping an outdated vanity light fixture by just spray painting the fixture matte black and adding different glass shades (they were $6 each at Menards!)
I went an extra step and got the fancy Edison lightbulbs to complete the industrial-farmhouse vibe that I was going for! I ended up saving about $50 by just refinishing the existing fixture and it was super quick!

All in all, this was one of the cheaper redecorating projects I have completed and I am SO happy with how it turned out!
What Is your next home project? I have a few lined up!

Mom-ing Mondays: Enough

10/5/2020

Sometimes I just feel not enough.

Not a good enough mom.
Not a good enough wife.
Not a good enough sister.
Not a good enough friend.
Not enough.

Picture
I know that (most of the time) this is just all in my head.
I also know that I’m not alone in feeling these feelings.
But still...in those moments, it's real.
And it sucks.

During this time of less in-person socializing, remote learning, working from home, etc. there is more than enough stress to go around for everyone...
and even more time to reflect and be in your own head.

Which is why I’ve decided it is enough.
Enough of the self-shaming & negativity.

I am good enough.
I am enough.

All around us, there is judgement.
There Is social media looming to make us compare ourselves until we go insane
and actually convince ourselves that we’re not enough.
And it just isn’t true.

We need to stop comparing.
Stop judging.
Stop.

Enough.

When the day or situation gets too stressful, then it is.
You don't have to justify that to anyone.

You are your own worst critic, which is something that I have to remind myself of hourly (or even more frequently).
You deal with your situation the best way that you are capable.
And sometimes, it won’t be pretty.

Trust me, there have been plenty of days (especially over the last few months) that I wish I could do over.

But we can’t.
We move on.
We try our best.
We put one foot in front of the other and greet a new day to do our best all over again.

Just know that you are enough.
You are your best when you feel good about yourself.

So the next time I am feeling not enough, I am going to think about why I’m feeling that way.
What is actually causing that thought to cross my mind?

Is there something in my control to change?
Or do I just acknowledge the feeling, feel it,
and then just understand that I’m doing my best.

I am enough.

Mom-ing Mondays: Putting the Phone Down

9/21/2020

Picture

I am absolutely guilty of being on my phone way too much. Especially during this time of not seeing family and friends quite as often--and definitely during the “stay at home” order-- is when I noticed the increase in my use of my phone, social media, etc.

A couple of weeks ago, Todd and I had a discussion about it. I decided that I was going to try keeping my phone put away, with volume on in case of a text or phone call, but try to stay off of the phone through the day other than checking for a message here and there.

Here’s what I noticed:

I was overall in a better mood

I was able to be more present and found myself interacting with the boys more often. I hadn’t realized how much I really was detaching myself from everyday life by looking at social media, creating content, online shopping and so on. After my first day of putting the phone down, I found that I was a bit sad about how much of a difference I felt.

I’ve heard news stories and read studies of how addictive phones and social media can be. I’m not oblivious to it. But realizing that one day of less time on my phone made such a big difference in my mood, I knew that my phone usage clearly had become a problem.

The Kids were More Manageable

From day one, I was able to catch arguments before they started, head off frustrations that were brewing, and just was able to have more fun playing with the boys. This was a huge difference from the normal interactions that had become pretty frequent--kids getting frustrated, and then in turn I would get frustrated with them. By being more present, I could predict behaviors and redirect the boys before we ended up having an issue.

Keeping it Balanced

These days, it is pretty difficult to just say no to social media and the phones altogether. Especially with trying to create a social media presence--that would be a bit difficult to continue. I enjoy writing this blog, sharing ideas, information and pictures, and I also enjoy seeing what other people create and share.

What I’ve realized is that there are appropriate times to be in that world, and it isn’t supposed to be while I have time to spend with the kids...or even with Todd for that matter. I can make time for myself and use it as I see fit, and maybe that is the time I can just veg-out and look through posts. I can also just do things in small increments and make sure to not get sucked into scrolling or doing a project when my attention should be elsewhere.
Picture
So the idea is not to turn your life upside down, not to totally get rid of your social media or screen time, but be more conscious of it. Think about how present you are throughout your day. I fall back into the habit on certain days and then other days I’m way better. It is definitely something I will need to unlearn and just do my best going forward.

Abercrombie & Amazon Haul

Picture
Fall fashion is my weakness, so of course I'm going to find some staple pieces to add to my wardrobe, but also make them items that I would wear around the house because more than likely, that is where I will be this year!

Here are some of my favorite Items that found while perusing the most recent  Abercrombie sale and Amazon:
Picture
Picture

The Studio Sister X A&F - Boyfriend Chenille Sweater

This sweater is so extremely soft and cozy, I would wear it every single day! I love that it is loose-fitting, but not frumpy. It is versatile and looks cute with a french tuck into some jeans, but could be worn with some leggings too! Looks like sizes are limited at the moment (I went with a small since it is a boyfriend fit), but Jen from The Sister Studio blog & Instagram has done a few collections with Abercrombie in the past, so be on the lookout for more or a restock!

The Sister STudio X A&F - Cozy Waffle Hoodie

Talk about the perfect fall top! This is a lightweight hoodie, simple but so cute with the waffle detail and the thicker hoodie strings! It is also a bit rounded at the bottom, so could be paired with either jeans or leggings! It is super soft material and I just love the look of this! I usually am right in between sizes small & medium (typically a size 6) and this size small is a great fit for me!

soft af - Oversized Crewneck Sweatshirt

I am definitely living for the leopard trend! I wanted just a cozy, big crewneck to wear out for a casual get-together or to wear around the house and still feel a bit "dressed". I grabbed this one when it was on sale, and there is usually a 15% off code available! This is a super soft and comfortable sweatshirt that I know I'm going to get a lot of use out of! I love that I can throw a black vest over it to even dress it up a bit! It is oversized, and I still went with the medium, but definitely could've gone with a small!

Amazon- Zesica Crewneck Striped Sweater

This sweater is a bit out of the norm for me with all of the color! (And yes, it is also wrinkled since I haven't washed it yet...whoops). I typically stick with neutrals and black, especially in the fall, but I love how fun and bright this sweater is! I went with a medium and it is a great fit. The material is great and so soft, and for a very reasonable price---I am really excited to wear this one!

Amazon - BTFBM Leopard sweater & Mangopop Bodysuit

See, I told you that I am here for leopard! I saw this on one of my favorite Instagram fashion influencer accounts as a knockoff for a leopard sweater at Nordstrom and just had to check it out. I love it as something comfortable and fun to just dress up some jeans or black leggings! I also paired it with my favorite affordable bodysuit that I've found! It is a ribbed, racerback tank style and also really comfortable for a bodysuit.

Mom-ing Mondays: Me Time

9/7/2020

[You'll notice this edition of Mom-ing Mondays is within the Lifestyle section because this one is more focused on the mom, less on the actual kiddos!]

Ahhh the old “I just need some time for me!” saying!

But for real.

We all need a break and we all need some forms of self-care throughout the week.

Now that Todd and I are continuing to schedule out our weeks, we’re going to also include that “me time” to get time away or time to ourselves to recharge and feel a bit more ourselves outside of being parents!

Here’s the list of things that I’m going to do for myself:

Work out

I love that we bought a stationary bike to allow for a more intense at-home workout during Covid! We also have enough free weights, a yoga mat, etc. for me to get a decent workout that I would’ve done at the gym previously! I’m going to schedule in workout time at least three times a week (maybe even just 20-30 minutes) and also try to get to The Dailey Method cycle & barre studio where my sister teaches when possible!

Get Dressed & ready

Especially during the fall, I really enjoy fashion, make up and hair! Just because I’m mostly staying at home doesn’t mean that I can’t get ready for the day and feel more put together! I'm going to make sure that I give myself time in the mornings to put on a real outfit (when I feel like it) and fix my hair and even put on some basic make up just to feel a bit normal.

Use all the oils

Since I’ve started using Young Living, I somehow seem to forget to use them on myself quite often. I always use them to help the kids, friends or family, but need to be better about setting myself up for success to begin the day. I'm going to integrate a morning oil application and diffusing routine to make sure that I’m focused on my own well-being too! The Gary Young "Good Day" method is where I will start:
- Valor on the wrists
- Harmony (or Loyalty) on the solar plexus
- Joy on the heart
- White Angelica to breathe In and brush all over from head to toe

Acupuncture

I’ve been going to my acupuncturist for over 2 years now and I will continue to use this as a meditation time to recharge, recenter, relax and focus on my overall wellness. If you haven’t yet ventured into the world of Chinese medicine, you should look into it! Not only does it help my mental & emotional state, but has helped with physical issues as well!

Stay Useful

While this might be a strange way to phrase it, i want to make sure that I am continuing to do projects throughout the week that give me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It doesn’t have to be one specific thing, but activities like writing my blog, the oil business and other small side projects are what keep me feeling like myself!
I’ve found that even things like big cleaning/organizing projects, redecorating and finding new favorite fashion pieces to share all keep me grounded and like I have accomplished something.

I’m going to definitely be trying to stay on top of these five things starting this week, but without letting it stress me out (because that would have the opposite effect of what I’m looking for!) What are your self-care “must haves”? Share them in the comments!

Have a great week everyone!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been trying out some Amazon clothing picks ranging from loungewear to going-out pieces! Here are a few of my favorite cute, affordable & comfy finds! Click each title for the Amazon link to each item!
Picture
Picture
Pink Joggers
I realized with e-learning coming upon us that I would need some new comfortable yet fashionable pieces, so what better than some joggers?! These are perfect for wearing around the house with a tank, running out and doing errands paired with a tee or sweater and make you feel like you’re in something a little nicer than your average sweats! I love this color and the fit of these! The thicker string and some little pockets on the back give it the perfect accents and the thickness of the material makes them feel high-quality! They are super soft and cozy, too! I’ll definitely be repurchasing in a few different colors soon!
Picture
Picture
Black Joggers
This pair of joggers is a bit more like leggings and thinner than the pink ones! They are super buttery soft and comfortable and have a higher-waist fit! I love wearing these with a workout tank around the house and can definitely see pairing these with a sweater for the fall! These are so soft and comfy that they can also double as pajama pants! Definitely a great find and affordable!
Picture
Picture
Black Racerback Romper
I have found the perfect summer outfit and it is the black romper! Dress it up with a jean jacket or chambray shirt, dress it down as a swimsuit coverup! This romper is super comfortable and versatile, while being flattering at the same time! The shorts are flowy and the way that it is gathered at the waist takes away any unwanted attention to the tummy! I have worn this romper so many times and it was definitely one of my best purchases of the summer!
Picture
Picture
Olive Green Paper bag-waist Shorts
I really never thought I’d be onboard with the high-waisted shorts look, but now I cannot get enough! These shorts are so perfect for a casual look but can also be dressed up with some nicer shoes and jewelry for a summer night out! The fit of these shorts are perfect! They gather at the waist with a cute ribbon belt and are fitted, but comfortable though the leg! I absolutely loved this shade of green shorts with a black tank and my leopard print slides for a recent girls night!
Picture
Picture
Black & White Striped Sleeveless Jumpsuit
I stumbled upon this beauty when trying to find the perfect outfit for my sister’s bachelorette party! I wanted something that would be comfortable, but a bit more dressed up that normal! I absolutely love this jumpsuit! From the ties on the shoulders to the flowy fit of the leg, this was a wonderful outfit that has become a new favorite of mine! I paired this jumpsuit with some black wedges and a simple necklace to enjoy some wineries and dinner with the girls!

While I do miss shopping in person, online shopping has become such a convenience with having kids and also through the pandemic! Take  a chance on some of these items and let me know how you love them!

10 Things About Me

6/15/2020

Picture
Since I’ve been doing this for two years (wow!) already, I figured maybe it’s time to get to know me a bit better! Here’s 25 things about me that you may or may not already know!

1. I am 50% Greek.
My grandma (Yiayia) came to the U.S. when she was a teenager with her aunt and some of her cousins. We were raised speaking Greek & English and also went to Greek School on Saturday mornings from Kindergarten through 6th grade! And yes, we are stereotypically proud of our Greek heritage.

2. I am one of three girls.
I am the middle of three sisters. My older sister, Christina, is two years older than me and works as a NICU nurse. She’s getting married in the fall and we’re so excited! Ariel is my younger sister by three years and works as a pediatric Occupational Therapist! She just got married this past year and I can’t wait to help decorate her new house.

3. I met my husband, Todd, during my senior year of college.
We had been working together over summers at Blarney Island (a bar in the middle of a lake) for the previous 3 years, but never really spoke or hung out (he’s 9 years older). We started talking at an employee training meeting. A week or two later, I stayed after work one night and went out with him and some of his cousins whom I had known since grade school, and we hit it off! I asked him on a date, and the rest is history!

4. I taught high school Biology & Human Anatomy for five years.
Before staying at home, I taught high school science and LOVED it! I decided to stay home because I wanted to be able to be home with my boys during their early years and also, having three under three is pretty difficult to have full time childcare for! I’m definitely planning on going back within the next couple of years because I definitely miss it!

5. I’ve been in a book club for almost 6 years.
My friend and “un-cousin” (cousin by marriage), Holly, started a book club for a small group of us and it has been going strong ever since. We joke that it has sometimes become less about the books and more about the food/drinks and get-togethers (which have been via zoom for the past few months), but still, being a part of this group has reignited my love for reading! I’ve also jumped into 3 other more specifically-focused book clubs since then!

6. I love doing makeup.
I discovered my passion for makeup right after graduating from undergrad about 10 years ago. I started off by watching YouTube makeup gurus, started testing out different brands and products, and even have done a few of my friends' makeup for their weddings! (Also did the makeup of one of my own bridesmaids for my wedding to help distract me from being nervous!)

7. I can play the piano & clarinet.
While I started by playing the violin, I don't count that as an instrument that I can still play. I started playing the clarinet in 5th grade and continued through my sophomore year in high school. I also learned how to play the piano from my grandma and continued teaching myself different songs throughout the years. I can often play-by-ear, without sheet music.

8. I moved to a new town when I was 10.
I grew up in Melrose Park, IL, and then our family moved to Lake Villa in 1998. It was a huge change-- our house was not built until November, but we started at our new school in August. My mom drove us the hour-long ride to school and back each day, so that we could avoid switching schools mid-year. I had to make new friends and basically start over, but I will always be grateful for my parents’ decision! I ended up moving back to Antioch (the town my high school is in) after college and we are raising our boys here too.

9. My husband’s family is HUGE (and mine is really not)
Contrary to the “Big, Fat, Greek Wedding”, my family is not really that large, especially in comparison to my husband’s family. Just on his dad’s side, there are 130 direct descendants from his grandparents! (Plus number 131 is on the way!) That does not include spouses, either. So, you can imagine what that family reunion looks like! It’s amazing and I love it!

10. I’m the opposite of a “picky-eater”
I absolutely love trying new foods! Ever since I met Todd, I have been more open to trying a variety of foods. Growing up, we pretty much stuck to some main staples, but now, I love almost every type of new food I try. My favorite meal has to be sushi or any Greek food, though!

Well, I hope you enjoyed learning something new about me! Thank you all for continuing to support my blog! It means a lot and I continue to enjoy doing this!

Books for a Better Me

6/3/2020

Picture
This year has been a year of reflecting for me. Who am I? What do I want? What kind of parent am I? Who do I want to be moving forward? Pretty deep, huh? But what better time to make some big changes in our way of thinking? What better time to step in a new direction than a time where there is so much unknown, turmoil and opportunities to do so?

There are some books that have aided this introspective look into my life so far, and a few that I’m still diving into, but know they will be powerful. Here are a few books that I have read, am currently reading and plan to read next to assist in my journey forward:
Picture

The Gift of Failure by Jessica Lahey

In this time of staying at home, book club has become virtual-book club. And I’ve also become involved in several book clubs over the course of this year!
My newest group is a parenting-focus book club in which we read and discussed “The Gift of Failure”. This book really hit home since it brought together my two roles--parent and teacher.
The main message of this book is to stop over-parenting. Let your child experience life and tasks for themselves, and try not to intervene. We need to bring up our children to be strong and capable humans, and let them know what failure feels like.
It was a great book to discuss too, so for those of you who are parents to kids of ANY age or those of you that are parents-to-be at some point, I encourage you to read (or listen to) this book.
Picture
A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
If like me you are ready for a new way to look at life, then you need to check out Eckhart Tolle. “A New Earth” describes how to live in the moment, not dwell in the past or yearn for the future. To view your true identity as something separate from The Ego.
Yeah. This one is a lot to take in, but such a refreshing approach to experiencing life. If we can get out of our conscious brain, truly feel our emotions and recognize why we are feeling a certain way, we can attain a new perspective.
This was a book that Oprah actually did a web series/podcast on with the author and they discuss the book chapter by chapter. I will link her series here. This was very helpful for me in processing the information in the book!
Picture
Untamed by Glennon Doyle

It has been a long time since I have actively read a book. I mean, underlining sections, marking pages with little post-it flags, the works. This book is SO powerful in changing your mindset.
That you don’t have to do what everyone expects. That you don’t have to conform to societal norms. That you can put yourself first, and teach your children to do the same.
There is so much positivity that radiates from Glennon’s story that it is impossible to not think about it constantly. Her memoir is one of being your true self and I can’t speak highly enough about it!
Picture
I Think You’re Wrong But I’m Listening by Sarah Stewart Holland & Beth Silvers

This book and the podcast created by the authors of the book have made an incredible impact on my life and how I participate in politics.
I was always sort of pressured to stay silent on my political views, especially in social (& familial) groups that have very different views from my own.
But Sarah and Beth present how we can share our views and hear the views of others with a little bit of grace and really, just  being open to not only speak up, but listen up, too. If you’re looking to dip your toe in the proverbial waters, definitely give this book (and their podcast “Pantsuit Politics”) a whirl.
Picture
So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo
The big one. Our current world is in a state of unrest and we need to understand fully why and how we can help.
I’ve made it a goal to educate myself on race and learn about the Black Lives Matter movement even more. I am currently reading “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo to really allow myself to participate in honest conversations about race and racism. So far, this book has provided me with a very straight-forward and direct message and allowed some real opportunities to think deeply about my role in this situation, which I appreciate. I look forward to completing this book, and then moving to my list of other race-related titles that have been recommended:

  • How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi
  • White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo
  • Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall
We all have room to grow, new things to learn and should take the opportunity to do so whenever possible. If reading books isn’t your thing, try audiobooks! That is actually the main way that I get through books these days!

Another great resource for all of the books and topics that I mentioned is to find podcasts that focus on those areas! Such a fun and interesting way to take in new information, and I am always on the lookout for more, so leave your podcast or book suggestions in the comments!

Oils 101!

4/22/2020

Picture
This past week, I hosted a virtual Oils 101 class over on Facebook! This was to share information about the essential oils and products that Young Living offers in their Premium Starter Kit! I decided to put the short video segments on my YouTube channel to be able to share again in the future!

My journey with essential oils began about 6 years ago before the birth of my first son, Leo. I was introduced to Lavender, Lemon & Stress Away to help support me through a stressful period of my life and I have never looked back! Having Young Living as a part of my family's lifestyle and also as a side business for myself has been such a blessing. I've learned so much, feel as though I have more options that I otherwise would have before in terms of supporting myself, husband and children's physical and mental wellbeing, all the while sharing with others and making so many new friends along the way. If that sounded like a sales pitch, I guess it sort of was, but not in the way you'd think. I have taken pride in being able to grow this group by truly just sharing and not selling, which is why I wanted to share information on this blog platform today.

Check out each segment to learn a bit about the Young Living products offered in the Starter Kit, the best way to introduce Young Living's products into your everyday life,  and feel free to contact me for more information on getting started! I've also included the DIY Recipes that I shared in this class via graphics at the end of this post!

This unprecedented time that we find ourselves in lends itself to learning about different tools and items to support a clean & healthy lifestyle. Enjoy & stay safe!
